How to Get a Digital Signature Certificate

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is the electronic equivalent of a physical signature. In India, a Class-3 DSC is mandatory for filing documents on the MCA portal, income tax e-filing for companies, GST enrolment, DGFT applications, and government e-tenders. It is issued by licensed Certifying Authorities (CAs) approved by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA).

Before you start

  • Aadhaar Card (linked to mobile for OTP authentication)
  • PAN Card
  • Passport-sized photograph
  • Valid email address and mobile number

Step-by-step

  1. Choose a Licensed Certifying Authority

Select a CCA-approved CA such as eMudhra, Sify, NSDL, or Capricorn. Compare pricing and turnaround times — most offer online application with video-based KYC (VBID) for faster processing.

  2. Select DSC Type and Validity

For most MCA, GST, and income tax filings, choose a Class-3 Individual or Organizational DSC. DSCs are available in 1-year or 2-year validity. A 2-year DSC reduces the frequency of renewal overhead.

  3. Complete Online Application and KYC

Fill in the CA's online application form with your personal details. Complete Video-Based Identity Verification (VBID) — a live video call where you show your Aadhaar and PAN on camera. Alternatively, some CAs support Aadhaar OTP-based eKYC without a video call.

  4. Pay the Fee

Pay the DSC fee online (typically ₹1,500–₹3,000 for 2 years). The CA will email a confirmation once payment is received.

  5. Download and Install the DSC Token Driver

The CA ships a USB cryptographic token (e-token) to your address within 1–2 working days. Install the token driver software provided by the CA. For online applications with eKYC, some CAs issue a software-based DSC downloadable directly.

  6. Register DSC on MCA and Other Portals

Plug in the USB token and register the DSC on the MCA portal under your director profile. Similarly register on the Income Tax portal (for company/LLP e-filing) and DGFT portal as required. Always keep the token PIN confidential.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a Class-2 DSC when Class-3 is required — the MCA and most government portals now mandate Class-3 DSC exclusively.
  • Misplacing the USB token PIN — after a set number of incorrect PIN attempts (usually 5), the token locks permanently and must be replaced.
  • Not renewing before expiry — an expired DSC causes immediate failure of electronic filings; renew at least 30 days before the expiry date.
  • Sharing the token with colleagues — a DSC is legally equivalent to your personal signature; sharing it makes you liable for any document signed with it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a DSC if I am an NRI?

Yes. NRIs can obtain a DSC using a valid passport and overseas address proof. Some CAs support international video KYC; otherwise, an apostille-attested ID may be needed.

What is the difference between a signing DSC and an encryption DSC?

A Signing DSC authenticates your identity on digital documents. An Encryption DSC encrypts documents so only the intended recipient can read them. Most regulatory filings require a Signing DSC; some procurement portals require a combo DSC (signing + encryption).

Do I need a separate DSC for each company I am a director of?

No. A single individual DSC in your name can be registered against your DIN on the MCA portal and used to sign filings for all companies where you are a director.

Can the token be used on multiple computers?

Yes. You can plug the USB token into any computer that has the token driver installed. The cryptographic key stays on the hardware token and does not transfer to the computer.
