How to Get Udyam
Udyam Registration (formerly Udyog Aadhaar) is the official MSME classification issued by the Ministry of MSME. It is free, paperless, and based on self-declaration. Registration unlocks collateral-free loans under CGTMSE, government tender preferences, lower interest rates, and protection against delayed payments under the MSMED Act.
Before you start
- Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner, or director
- PAN of the enterprise (mandatory for non-micro enterprises)
- GSTIN if registered under GST
- Bank account details
- NIC activity codes for business activities
Step-by-step
Visit the Udyam Registration Portal
Go to udyamregistration.gov.in. Select 'For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME' or 'For those already having Udyog Aadhaar' as appropriate.
Authenticate with Aadhaar
Enter the Aadhaar number of the proprietor/managing partner/authorised director and validate using OTP sent to the registered mobile. This is the primary authentication — no physical documents are required.
Fill Enterprise Details
Provide the business name, PAN, GSTIN, bank account, date of commencement, NIC codes for activities, number of employees, and investment in plant/machinery. Investment and turnover data are automatically fetched from the IT and GST databases.
Verify Category (Micro/Small/Medium)
The portal auto-classifies your enterprise based on investment in plant & machinery and annual turnover: Micro (investment ≤₹1 cr, turnover ≤₹5 cr), Small (≤₹10 cr, ≤₹50 cr), Medium (≤₹50 cr, ≤₹250 cr).
Submit and Download Certificate
Review all details carefully and submit. The Udyam Registration Certificate (with a unique Udyam Registration Number) is generated instantly as a PDF. Download and save it — no physical certificate is posted.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Over-reporting investment or turnover — this may push you into a higher category, reducing scheme benefits available to smaller enterprises.
- Using a personal Aadhaar not linked to the business owner — the Aadhaar must belong to the sole proprietor, managing partner of a firm, or an authorised director of a company.
- Registering multiple times for the same enterprise — one enterprise can have only one Udyam registration; duplicate registrations are automatically flagged and cancelled.
- Not updating the registration when turnover crosses a category threshold — Udyam details must be updated annually from IT returns.
Frequently asked questions
Is Udyam Registration mandatory?
It is not strictly mandatory to operate a business, but it is required to access MSME-specific schemes, government tenders, and priority sector lending. Most banks also require it for MSME loan processing.
Can startups get Udyam Registration?
Yes, as long as they meet the investment and turnover thresholds. DPIIT-recognised startups can additionally register under Udyam, and both recognitions can coexist.
How does Udyam help with delayed payment recovery?
Under Section 16 of the MSMED Act, if a buyer delays payment beyond 45 days (or the agreed period, whichever is shorter), the buyer must pay compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate. Udyam-registered MSMEs can file complaints through the MSME Samadhan portal.
Does Udyam Registration expire?
The registration itself does not expire, but the investment and turnover details must be updated annually. If a business crosses the MSME thresholds for three consecutive years, it loses MSME status.
